Ministry in the Favelas
The Favelas are large areas of shanty houses built around the great cities of Brazil. They are populated by the poorest of peoples, who come to the cities hoping for a better life. In recent years, thousands have come to the semi-jungle areas around Manaus. They come hundreds at a time for security and set up on land belonging to others. There is no running water, sanitation, electricity or roads in these Favelas. To the church in Manaus this invasion of people is seen as a great opportunity for the gospel. A mission organisation in the USA gave them 50 tents which they erected as churches all over the Favela area. In the morning they teach the children elementary education and in the afternoon they teach health and hygiene to the mothers. In the evening the tent holds a gospel crusade.
Many churches have now been planted using this method and thousands have been won for Christ.
